Scholz says suspension of clashes in Ukraine not to lift sanctions

BERLIN, Jun 14 (PRIME) – The situation in Ukraine should be normalized with Moscow and Kyiv reaching agreements to ensure sovereignty before the E.U. will lift its anti-Russian sanctions, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said late on June 10.

“We’ve introduced sanctions, so it will be right for us to make an effort that as many countries join the sanctions as possible, as they are one of the instruments together with the supplies of weapons and provision of financial aid that strengthen the possibility of helping Ukraine so that it can define its own democratic future, protect its own sovereignty and territorial integrity, and has an efficient army in the future. This is what is behind the sanctions,” he said.

“That is why everyone should understand that sanctions that we have imposed, the sixth package, and the sanctions of many other countries will not vanish when the weapons stop firing. The condition for that to happen is improvement of the situation, it is Russia coming to terms with the fact that it will not be able to force Ukraine to make peace, it is Russia reaching agreements with it that will mean that sovereignty and territorial integrity are actually protected.”
